SPUR Opens on Broadway: A Home for Urbanism in Oakland

Being a member-supported organization gives SPUR the ability to take an independent and holistic approach to urban issues. For more than 100 years, we have helped develop solutions to the most important issues facing the Bay Area, from affordable housing to climate change. Now we are expanding our community and our work in Oakland — and we need your help to make it happen.

We are thrilled to be working in Oakland and have found the perfect home at 1544 Broadway, right in the heart of downtown. Our vision is to create a truly community-oriented space, one where Oakland residents can learn from one another and share ideas about the future of their city. Our downtown storefront location will allow us to greatly expand our calendar of forums and community gatherings, develop more original programming and inaugurate exhibitions.

In order to fund the new space, we are running a crowdfunding campaign. We chose crowdfunding because it mirrors our approach to civic engagement: bringing together diverse parties to achieve a common goal. Crowdfunding is the perfect way to amplify our mission while providing the support we need to finish our buildout and open our new office.

We hope you’ll join us in our efforts to make Oakland an even greater place to live, work and play. Please contribute to our campaign and help us build a home for public dialogue about the future of the city.

Backers of this campaign can choose perks ranging from a private walking and photography tour of downtown with SPUR Oakland Director Robert Ogilvie to a one-of-a-kind dinner hosted by Chop Bar’s Chris Pastena.

The campaign runs from January 4 through January 27, 2016. We will open our doors to the public with a free open house on January 27 to celebrate the official opening of the space. We look forward to seeing you there!
